Why is sensory play recommended?

As a speech-language pathologist, I love sensory play. It’s one of those rare activities that looks simple but hits a ton of developmental goals at once.

Problem-solving – figuring out how to make shapes stand, roll evenly, or stick together.

Early math concepts – size, quantity, comparison (“bigger/smaller,” “more/less”).

Helps kids self-regulate (calming for anxious or overstimulated children).

Vocabulary development (textures, actions, colors, shapes).

Storytelling (“This is a snake… now it’s a bridge!”).

Social interaction when kids play together and negotiate ideas.

The list can go on and on :)
